Mo McGrath
Here’s our most useful recipe, so far. Sparkling wine will never be the same again.
Mo McGrath is named for a friend who isn’t called Mo and stopped using McGrath the same night her cocktail was invented.*
Portable and easily found in bars, we’ve combined Mo’s ingredients at catered events, clubs, sporting grounds, picnics and hotel rooms. We’ve served her as a welcome drink and to the lingerers at the end of the night, to equal glee.
Recipients: Sparkling and still wine drinkers. Also, those who prefer to drink sparkling wine with a mixer.
Type: Made In Glass
EQUIPMENT
Champagne flute
INGREDIENTS
15-20ml lime cordial
Sparkling wine
METHOD
Sprinkle 8-10 drops bitters in the bottom and sides of your champagne flute.
Pour 15-20ml lime cordial on top of the bitters.
Slowly and carefully top up with sparkling wine.
And that’s it. Enjoy!
SERVE
Serve it in the glass you made it in.
Garnish with a lime slice, if you like. We’ve never bothered. 🙂
OPTIONAL
We’ve used sauvignon blanc and it was perfectly drinkable, much more drinkable than the sauvignon blanc on it’s own.
*ANECDOTE
Mo McGrath was invented at Sarah Medcalf’s (nee McGrath’s) wedding reception. Sensibly, we were seated toward the rear of the room adjacent to the bar, which did not stock orange juice for Shelly’s mimosas. However, we did have sparkling wine. Fortunately, a staff member had left bitters and lime cordial on the bar. I promptly mixed up a solution.
During the ceremony I overheard a hushed conversation between Sue Henry, my Cocktails For Mums collaborator and Mick, my husband. “Mo is an unusual middle name for a female.” “Yes, I wonder why the vows didn’t include her full name.” Because we were witnessing a monumental life event I didn’t explain that the script typeface on the invitation caused the Mc of McGrath to look like Mo. And Sarah’s middle name is not Mo.
