Cow Face is punchy coffee cocktail sipped through a sweet icy cream layer. This century’s response to Irish coffee has arrived.

This is our first creamy cocktail recipe and it’s been a huge hit from the first test.

It works equally well with cow’s milk cream or coconut cream, so choose your preference.

 

Recipients: Lovers of cappuccino, white Russian or Kahlua and milk.

 

Type: Frozen and layered

 

INGREDIENTS

40ml butterscotch schnapps

30ml cream, either from a cow or coconut

20ml espresso coffee*

20ml coffee liqueur, like Kahlua*

Ice

Cacao powder to garnish

 

EQUIPMENT

Blender

Cocktail martini glass or large coupe glass

 

METHOD

1. Get out a martini glass. Pour 20ml espresso and 20ml Kahlua into the glass.

2. In your blender, pour 30ml cream and 40ml butterscotch schnapps with a large scoop of ice. Blend until smooth.

3. Into your glass, carefully spoon a thick layer of sweet cream over the top of your coffee mix, taking care to keep the two layers separate.

4. Pour the rest of the sweet cream into the glass. The initial cream layer provides some barrier protection.

5. Garnish with a sprinkling of cacao powder.

The layers of a Cow Face cocktail are easily achieved and will stay separate even while being sipped.

 

NOTES

We prefer to make the bottom layer with 40ml Steinbok Coldpresso, which is espresso martini mix ready to shake. It contains real cold pressed coffee.

 

ANECDOTE

Our first published creamy recipe has been a long time coming. There was a hill to conquer, first.

For over twenty years, I’ve wanted to call a cocktail Cow Face. And in my head it looked like a cow hide, patches of white and dark brown, a spectacular separated lava lamp of White Russian.

Harsh reality dictates that liquids don’t often stay in patches. And attempts often result in murky beige and/or curds.

Immature dreams compromised to science.  And finally, pieces fell where they should. As a result it is easier to achieve than a lot of layered cocktail recipes. Oh, and the introduction of butterscotch makes this taste like a creamy dream.
