La Cucaracha
La Cucaracha is a spectacle. It is best served at special occasions with familiar faces. As with most cocktail shots, it looks exciting. Contrary to the reputation of shots, it is smoother than expected.
Confession: Not my recipe. Our Spanish friend, Jose Antonio Laguens Martin showed us how to make these too many years ago to tell. And we’ve never looked back. Viva EspaƱa!
Recipients: Party people in a controlled environment
Type: Shot
EQUIPMENT
Shot glass
Lighter
Straw
Teaspoon
INGREDIENTS
15 ml Kahlua
15 ml at least 40% white tequila
or
15 ml at least 40% flavoured vodka
METHOD
Half fill your shot glass with Kahlua. Use a heavy bottom, ordinary shot glass. If you use a novelty shot glass it might crack when lit.
Slowly float tequila or vodka on top of the Kahlua. Use the back of a teaspoon if you like. I find it easier to pour it directly from the bottle. I can’t seem to manage a shot glass, a bottle and a teaspoon!
Set the tequila or vodka alight. Depending on your lighter, the shot glass or your pouring it may be awkward to light. If so, scoop a little tequila or vodka from the top into a teaspoon. Light the liquid in the teaspoon then slowly pour the it back into the shot glass.
Drink it through a straw while lit! Without blowing out the flame, plunge a straw all the way to the bottom of the shot glass and drink it in one go, flame and all.
OPTIONAL
Make one for a friend.
