Gimlet
Gimlet is a timeless classic. Many get togethers, this is what I serve as a first drink. She’s fresh and citrusy but her outstanding quality is that a Gimlet perfectly embodies the exquisite sweet and sour balance we think of when we imagine a cocktail glass.
And she’s so beautiful with that moonstone opacity. You’ll never serve her just one time. She’ll be on your list of favourites if only for the simplicity of the recipe.
Recipients: Guests who like classic cocktails, especially those that aren’t too sweet.

EQUIPMENT
Shaker
Cocktail glass, martini glass, champagne coupe
INGREDIENTS
30 ml gin
15 ml lime juice
20 ml lime cordial
Ice
Lime wheel
METHOD
1. Scoop ice into your shaker
2. Pour 30ml gin over the ice, followed by 20ml lime cordial and 15ml lime juice.
3. Shake vigorously until the outside of your shaker is very frosty.
5. Strain into a cocktail glass.
Garnish with a lime wheel.
ALTERNATE
We’ve been served plenty of gimlets over ice. I don’t see a reason for this serving method to be unacceptable, especially when the weather is warm, for instance.
ANECDOTE
Popular history is that in 1867 sugar was added to lime juice to create Rose’s Lime Juice, which was stored onboard to help British sailors keep scurvy at bay. Gin was then added because it was a good drink. So, gimlets all ‘round!
We add some lime juice to our recipe because Rose’s Lime Juice Cordial is a little more tart than most off the shelf lime cordials.
